Balaenoptera brydei

By R. Fujimoto

Introduction

image00In the Pacific Ocean which spreads off Kochi, there is the grand Balaenoptera brydei.  In Kochi prefecture famous for whale watching a whale is sightseeing material. While there are several kinds of whales, Balaenoptera brydei is a kind currently liked by many tourists. This Balaenoptera brydei is introduced this time.

Description & Taxonomy

It is distinguished in outside because mustached hair is baleen is short and that apply near a nostril from rostrum edge and the right-and-left both sides of the upper surface of a snout have an upheaval line of one articles each although it is close species of a sei whale, that a trough is long and the tip has reached the navel, wide, and thick.

The length is also slightly smaller than a sei whale, and is only a maximum of 15.5 meters.

Although Balaenoptera brydei was presupposed that only the South Africa coast is inhabited once, it was discovered around the postwar years and Ogasawara Islands, and it became clear that it was also widely distributed over the North Pacific.

We decided that the International Whaling Commission will correct the appended chart of Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in 1970, and it treats this kind and a sei whale as another kind. The small fish which this kind uses as the staple food is the food of large-sized wide-ranging fish, such as a bonito, and a possibility that the group of large-sized wide-ranging fish is in the ocean space in which this kind is present also becomes high.

Moreover, there is a merit which protects itself from swordfish by being attached to a whale in a bonito, and katsuokujira of this kind or a close relationship forms one small ecosystem by one individual.

Use & Conservation
Balaenoptera brydei becomes known as the subject of whale watching, and is loved, and the whale is enjoyed as what is not eaten and is seen now when control of whaling is severe.

In the Fisheries Agency version Red Data Book, it is regarded as the rare animal and has become a candidate for preservation.

Shikoku-Inu

by A. Sato

Introduction

If you come across a dog called a “Tosa Inu” with huge brown body, drooping ears and impressive scary face, you’d better hope he’s a “good boy” in general. The Shikoku Inu is not to be confused with the fighting dog, even though in history it shared the same name.

It is the dog came to be known as the dog to introduce this time, and “Shikoku-Inu” now. This breed is becoming more popular overseas as well, I want you to know about it in addition to the more well-known Shiba-Inu and Kishu-Inu.

Taxonomy & Description

“Shikoku-Inu” is a canine, having the same classification as the Golden retriever Shiba-Inu. The size is from the feet up to the shoulder, from 46cm to 55cm and weighs between 15kg and 23kg. It is darker than Shiba-Inu has a large build, but it is not a particularly big dog.

This breed originated in Kochi Prefecture, was originally created for the purpose of hunting companion in mountain village near the Shikoku Mountains. It had to withstand hunting, and have the stamina and endurance. It is top class also in the Japanese dog. Once upon a time there was a classification system that included Hongawa, Aki, Uwajima varieties of the Shikok-Inu. However, due to mixed breeding, the difference between those varieties is no longer so.

Compared to other Japanese dogs, it has a sharp look, do not mistake many people to see Shepherd and Japanese Wolf. In some2000,fact,talk because they confuse the dog Japanese Wolf Shikoku and also in it was shaking the media.

Others are wary of the dog seems to have the blood of the dog in Japan, but to its master it is faithful. It is also possible that hound dog is also originally Shikoku-Inu, so pretty rough temper, would have to bite to others attention. As a matter of course, depending on how the discipline of the owner, you might become emotionally attached to others, however. If you have any if you have a Shikoku-Inu, owners will not have to study how firmly discipline should not be.

By the way, was called the Shikoku-Inu as “Tosa-Inu” originally. However, dog fighting was produced by hybrid of Shikoku dog and other dogs and like after – other called Japanese-Mastiff was born. Order came to be called “Tosa-Inu” even the dog, in order to distinguish the old Tosa, now referred to as “Shikoku-Inu”.

viewing, ecological

The Shikoku-Inu found only in a specific location is not available. However, compared to dogs such as Akita-Inu and Shiba-Inu, name recognition is quite low. Perhaps you think the Japanese “What is the Shikoku-Inu?” and often also asked to be returned to the same question from the Japanese.

This is because of the strength of will enough to be riding through the mountains and the roughness of temper. Unlike the docile Shiba, this character and stamina, to discipline civilians may be a little difficult when compared to Shikoku-Inu.
However, some ardent enthusiasts. So that no blood of the dog loves to Shikoku, some people have put the power to save. Shikoku-Inu itself, if you are starting from the time of the puppy, does not mean there is a big difference with his personality and other Japanese dog. I think discipline is also so easy to do.

If you want to see a lot of Shikoku dog, you’ll carry your feet and go to the exhibition. Owner has been training in order to show to people, can be seen Shikoku-Inu specific, is awe-inspiring figure.

Also, if you want to see kept, rather than a pet shop, it is recommended that you contact the Preservation Society. Only a low degree of well-known to breed, it is a thriving information between breeders and enthusiasts with each other, and those who rely on sources of information there, you will be able to get a good Shikoku-Inu.

It is a moderate exercise and discipline, that you must keep careful when most. Discipline is natural. Long as any dog, if you keep is more important than anything. Shikoku-Inu is a dog as a hunting dog and was issued birth. Always try to go for a walk twice a day.

In addition, Shikoku dog is so prone to allergic dermatitis. Performed such as brushing and shampoo moderately, please try to prevention.

Use

Shikoku-Inu is quick-tempered dog. The pet, such as Papillon and Chihuahua is not suitable. The orientation watch dog. However, how to discipline, depending on how the shepherd, it is also a gentle personality. The era of now there is no Tosa-Inu is also recorded in Kochi that was using the dog as Shikoku-Inu fighting dogs. 600 years ago, is the time of the 14th century from now. From the length of this history, Shikoku-Inu is going to love.

Japanese Squirrel: Sciurus lis

by M. Fujimoto

Introduction

The number of Sciurus lis is becoming fewer every year. As a kind with fear of extinction, it is indicated to the Red Date Book. And this is fundamentally called the Sciurus lis. But it is also called “Kinezumi” and “Hondolis” in Honshu.

Description & Taxonomy

Sciurus lis of length from head to trunk is about 18-22cm. And the length of tail is about 15-17cm. A tail is the length of the same about as the body. It is very long. Sciurus lis resembles “Sciurus vulgaris orientis” in appearance but not in hair. The hair of Sciurus lis changes with seasons as follows.
The hair of hand and foot is reddisbrown in summer. And ear’s soft hair is lost in winter.
Sciurus lis belongs Rodentia, Sciuridae, Sciurinae and Sciurus.

Range & Ecology

Sciurus lis inhabits Honshu except Setouchi and San-in, Shikoku and Awaji-shima. It is said that Sciurus lis was exterminated in Kyushu and Chugoku district.

Since a Sciurus lis lives on trees, it can live only the place that trees stands in a row. In other words, it can’t live in the place that trees have grown independently like the park.

Sciurus lis hasn’t make a group and activity time is only several hours from early morning. So,it is difficult for us to look at it. Sciurus lis makes a nest on Pinus densiflora or Larix kaempfen and it doesn’t make on broadleaf trees. It uses the bark of Japanese cedar when it makes a nest. But these are wonderful phenomena , we can’t be solving the detailed reason yet.

Use & Conservation

We are apprehensive that Sciurus vulgania which imported as a pet escaped, it hybridizes with Sciurus lis and will be born the cross lately. And it is also poached in the national park and the number is decreasing. Sciurus lis eats the seed of trees, fruits and mushrooms. Since it is visible like a fried shrimp after Sciurus lis gnaws a cone and eats an inner fruit, it is called the “fried shrimp”. Then eaten nuts are buried at many places by them. So it is said that they contribute to expansion of a forest.

Viewing

If you want to see Sciurus lis in Kochi, what is necessary is just to walk along the forest of the Shimanto River origin region. However, if you would like to see them certainly, going to Noichi Doubutsukouen in Kochi will be the best method.

Japanese Monkey: Macaca fuscata fuscata

by K. Terayama

Introduction

These days the population of these monkeys is decreasing in a semi-natural area. This is due to human demographic shift in those areas. Also, a decrease in fields caused population decrease. Broad-leaved forest is source the monkey’s food and when those forests decrease, the monkeys turn to alternative human sources of food. And now a days monkey proliferate population size that why monkey can get many food that man can’t keep enough that forest. Increased monkey cause of wild life nuisance. For example monkey tear up someone’s house or snarl at children or old man and damage field during harvesting season.

Description & Taxonomy

Japanese monkey live a troop. Japanese monkey is divided into two groups by ecological point. One group called Macaca fuscata fuscata live the Japanese main land and natural limit all over the world. Cause of that they called “snow monkey” Another group called Macaca fusata yakui they live the “Yakushima” .They are smaller than Macaca fuscata fuscata.

Range & Ecology

Japanese monkey’s male called “solitary” that is some male live solo . That means prevent inbreeding. But they have rare case observed female live lonely. Normal Japanese monkey is live a troop and that have 10~200 in troop. that troop is the maternal line troop.Macaca fuscata fuscata is 50~70cm long and male weight about 15kg females smaller than male. And they have red face and red buttocks in a breeding season. That is sing they are sexual full grow have an individual.

Use & Conservation

In Kochi many monkey cause of wild life nuisance. So a public office prize monkey and people killed monkey. If killed old monkey ,young male or monkey have many food, female can drop baby. That is meaningless for decrease population size.So we should killed be pregnant female or ripe female or take chance monkey get many food.

In Nakatosa (in Takaoka district) start project named “Saru saru project”(that mean monkey leave near the village and they live only forest). For example leave orange, loquat (Japanese-plum) can get all. Cause of that monkey can’t eat that. And we make jam or jelly or etc.from that. Then it is sold in local markets which makes people have interest about that.

Vewing

Wild animal change harmful or harmless for human. We shouldn’t have a one-side way of understanding about that. And think about coexistence. This summer “Saru saru project” have a plan away off monkey if they approach field or private houses.

If you have interest in “Saru saru project” give me an e-mail for miruku0422@gmail.com Please join us!!

Japanese dormouse

by Y. Minami

Introduction

There are many animals that are in danger of extinction in Kochi. The Japanese dormouse is one of such animals.

This animal has a relation with people from long time ago for example it was thought by old people “guardian deity of forest” because there is a case that Japanese dormouses are hibernating in tree’s hole. Moreover, they do hibernation at place where people live: futon, chest of drawers and so on.

Description & taxonomy

Scientific name of Japanese dormouse is “Glirulus japonicus” It belongs to Glirulus. It includes only Japanese dormouse. Glirulus is part of Gliridae that have 6 other Glirulus: Dryomys, Eliomys, Glis, Graphiurus, Muscardinus, Myomimus, and Selevinia. Japanese dormouse lives by making nest in wasp’s old nest or rock’s crevice and on the broadleaf tree or on the rock of forest only in Japan. In Kochi, they live at the source of Shimanto river. In addition, they are seen in Kochi city, Tosa district and Takaoka district and so on, each place in Kochi. When the temperature drops to 12~14℃ they start hibernation under the ground, fallen leaves, tree’s hole, and futon in the people’s cabin. They eat many kinds of things for example insects, bird’s eggs, fruits, leaf buds, seeds and so on. Japanese dormouse’s usually weights 14~23g, but Japanese dormouse which is before hibernation is about 40g weight because it eats so much to save energy.

The body is 6.8~8.4cm long, and the tail is 4.4~5.4cm long whose hair is fall out when it is caught. Its whole body is covered with brown hair and back has black stripe, but abdomen’s area is covered with white brown hair. A around eyes area is covered with black hair.

They live about 3 years in the wild, while in breeding live 8 years.

Extinction

Japanese dormouse may face extinction because its number is decreasing by loss of habitat. So since 1975, Japanese dormouse had been registered with a precious natural treasure. Besides, it has been registered with Red Data Book (RDB). But each rank of RDB are deferent: IUCN’s rank is “Least Concern(LC)” whereas Japan ministry environment use different RDB criterion from IUCN’s one and Japanese dormouse’s rank at Japan ministry environment’s RDB is “Near Threatened(NT)” And Kochi’s rank is “Vulnerable(VU)” that is more danger than NT.

Nihonkamoshika in Shikoku is about 1300 head.

Nihonkamoshika are monogamous. They are curious and like a cliff. When they are chased by dogs, they run away to cliff. They have territory and usually act independently. Male and male or female and female don’t live in the same space. A child drifts away from its parents at one or two years. In autumn they copulate, in spring females have a baby. An average life is four years. The longest life is twenty years.

Conservation

We have a problem. Fields are damaged by Nihonkamoshika. It is the causes of agriculture damage. So Nihonkamoshika have been shot rather than have been conserved.

Viewing

They inhabit mountainous region the eastern part of Kochi. We can see them in Wanpark Kochi. There are four Nihonkamoshika. They are Aki, Ken, Natsu and Tetsu.

Tosaken: Kochi’s Famous Fighting Dog

by Y. Katayama

Introduction

Dogs are lovely animals that are usually kept as a pet and which we can cuddle. It is very sweet. However, there is one dog that we can not cuddle or keep as a pet. It is Tosakenfightingdog. They attract us through a charm different from loveliness.

Ecology

The kind was improved to the Tosakenfightingdog in the Tosa clan in active Shikoku of the dogfight at the Meiji era. Old English Mastiff, bulldog, bull terrier, great dane, etc were cross bred with the Shikokudog to produce this superior fighting dog.

The color of its hair, rough is red, fown, and a black. There were a lot of dogs that had a red macula in white in Kochi Prefecture the beginning of the Showa era. However, the number of red dogs has increased by the improvement afterwards. Torake and white exist a little, too. The hair quality is very short and hard.

The physique is very muscular. This is unusual Japanese dogs. The head is very like the mastiff. The skin is loose. This to be safe even if bittenThe tail and the ear a hung down.

There is very a difference in the physique. A big dog is 100Kg or more though small dogs are 30 kilos in weight. The dog of roughly 60Kg or more becomes a large dog.

The territorial imperative of the character is very strong. When the male fights, it becomes abnormally aggressive. However, it is obedient in reality, and it is very obedient to the master. There is bravely, and boldly endurance. The militant spirit and aggressiveness are first classes though it generously becomes accustomed to the person soon. Such a character is a charm of the Tosakenfightingdog.

Longevity is about 11 years. Where it lives until 18 is the highest record.

Because Tosa Ken’s power is very strong if it breeds, it is difficult for the woman to keep it. And, it is difficult also for raising dogs’ beginners. We should train with love and endurance when it is small because we might rage when lazy in the discipline.

Viewing

The Tosa dogfight is assumed to be “Dangerous kinds of dogs” and there is a restriction in countries such as Britain, France, and Germany. The owner’s breeding is, and the snakebite accident is insufficient and there is pickled radish in Japan. The person has died on the inside. We are not carefully enough of breeding. It is likely to be bitten by the Tosa Ken. It is important that and we make a good relation with the Tosa Ken.

Tanuki: Nyctereutes procyonoides

Since the old days, Japanese people have had friendly feelings toward tanuki, the raccoon dog. Its taxonomy is raccoon dog genus, dog family and scientific name is Nyctereutes procyonoides. It length is 50~60cm,weight is 3~10kg and life is 3~5years.

It was imported for fur, and has since gone wild. Also, Japanese raccoon dog has two species. First is Ezo raccoon dogs in Hokkaido. Second is Hondo raccoon dogs in Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Ezo raccoon dog’s fur and limbs are longer than Hondo raccoon dog’s. The raccoon dog is seen villages mountains, superhighways and dwellings in Kochi. These are Hondo raccoon dogs.

It is of the carnivorous , or cat, order whose common ancestor lived in trees in the forest, but left the habitat of grassy plain to forests to look for game. It evolved into various species. The tanuki is is dog genus. Then raccoon dog adapted to life in the forest. It retains the characteristics of primitive dog genus animal.

In the modern era, raccoon dog was almost driven to extinction because of indiscriminate hunting. The raccoon dog was over hunted by people for fur product. Recently mountains and forests are declining, so raccoon dog are seen at the city. They live in drains, and eat the kitchen garbage. As a result they are increasingly involved in traffic accidents all over Japan.

By the way, the raccoon dog has many local name. For example, in farm village around Kanto people call them Mujina. Other local names include Anappo, Kainehori, Danza, Tonchibo, Hachimujina, Banbuku, Bo-zu, Mameda and Yomono. These names are based on action and appearance.

Also there is a famous Japanese expression using raccoon dog, “Tanukineiri”. It means pretending to be asleep. This language origin is from when the hunter shoots a gun, and the raccoon dog was so surprised by the report of a gun that it fainted. The hunter thought he had downed a raccoon dog, and he was careless. Just then, raccoon dog wake up and run away. This old story shows cowardly character of raccoon dog.

Raccoon dog is very popular among Japanese people!

Tosaken: Kochi’s Mastiff

Fighting dogs are used dog fighting game as one of recreation of people. In Japan, the recreation is held in Kochi and Akita. The dog which is used dog fighting game is mainly Mastiff species. But the past, the dog of Spitz species was used.

Tosaken is about 90 kg. Akitaken is about 54 kg. Tosaken and Akitaken’s life are similar. It is about 10~12 years.

Now, Tosaken distribute each place of Japan. But in the early Showa period, it was found in Tosa of Kochi.

Originally the Tosaken improved a Japanese dog used for hunting in mountains of Kochi as the world strongest dogfight became the biggest Japanese dog. The blood relationships such as a bulldog, a pointer, a mastiff, the Great Dane are introduced by a process of the improvement. It is only male dog to appear in the ring and divide it into the class every weight and face.

Tosaken is usually quiet dog, but becomes the dangerous dog depending on discipline. Tosaken fights in backyard of house or the vacant land, then Tosaken misunderstand fight at all time and anyplace. Such Tosaken became nervous character that cautious on everyday take a walk. Then Tosaken may bite the thing which broke out to face by mistake. Therefore it is importance that Tosaken discipline to fight in sumo ring.

Tosaken center in Katsurahama of Kochi holds fights between Tosakens. In the Tosaken center direct Tosaken where common man can’t enter division cage look and prepare for issue certificate of attestation that natural monument of Kochi.

They inhabit mountainous region the eastern part of Kochi. We can see them in Wanpak Kochi. There are four Nihonkamoshika. They are Aki, Ken, Natsu and Tetsu.

Inoshishi: Wild Boar

Wild boar’s scientific name is Sus scrofa. The wild boar is an animal classified into the wild boar family wild boar belonging. Wild boar’s nose is a very sensitive, nervous animal. The wild boar has subspecies of about 30 kinds in the world.

Two subspecies the Japan wild boar and the Ryukyu wild boar are distributed in Japan. Wild boars live in the forest and meadow where the weeds grow on the low mountain belt and where the plain grows thickly, and likes place where the water place is near. Wild boar food habitat are places where the plant that has grown in the forest is underground stem, fruits, and bamboo shoot. The animal eats many insect kind, the earthworm, the river crab, and the snake, etc. according to the change of the seasons.

Moreover, it is likely to infest in the vicinity of the house for farm products. Birds and small mammals, etc. Wild boar’s are also sometimes eaten. However, it eats at time when the corpse had dropped by chance and time alone when another doesn’t have the eaten one at all.

The wild boar has the excellent motor nerve that the body cannot imagine. It is possible to run the speed at about 45 km/h highest. In addition, an adult mammal of 70kg has been observed to run-up and jump over the bar of the height of 121cm an the experiment by the Kinki chugoku Shikoku agricultural research center. However, it is not good at one with the stereoscopic effect. A hedge put up diagonally cannot be jumped over.

The power of wild boar’s nose is very strong, and can move as much as 50-60kg stone even with the female by 70kg or more in the male. Moreover, it has ability to swim though like dog paddle level. The wild boar that swims in the sea in Japan’s Inland Sea is frequently witnessed.

Recently, the number in Japan of wild boars that infest in the village is in the increasing tendency. Especially, doing the agriculture and forestry industry damage becomes a problem in under-populated areas and the senior citizen village. In Hiroshima Prefecture and Hyogo Prefecture, etc., it infests even in the vicinity of the residential quarter, where it ruins the garden of the private house and eats the garbage of the road. It is known to cause personal suffering to harm man biting happen frequently, too.

The wild boar is hard to control because it has an advanced learning ability though there is control methods such as sounding the firecracker sound, and using the oil smell. It is too expensive and not realistic to put up steel or electrified fence to prevent it completely. Kure City and Takehara City, etc. in Hiroshima Prefecture provided the subsidy for the installation of the protective grille, and giving the wild boar food for the first time in the whole country enacted the prohibited wild boar ordinance to Kobe City.

Many wild boar lives in the mountains near Nakayama in Kochi Prefecture.
